With just 1 hour of drive from Bhopal, Bhojpur is known for its unfinished Bhojeshwar temple. The temple, which is more than 1000 years old, is situated on a mountain on bank of River Betwa. Simple and square in design doesn’t look much from outside but as you enter the interior will amaze you. The temple ceiling is supported by four gargantuan pillar. The temple was build by Raja Bhoj during 1010-1055 CE. He was huge patron of art, architecture and culture and it was his wish to build a huge lord Shiva temple.
The shivling in the Bhojeshwar temple measures 7.5 feet in height, and 17.8 feet in circumference. The total height of the lingam including the platform is 40 feet which makes it the tallest in the country.
But then why this temple was left incomplete. As per the records, there might have been natural disaster following which king may not have left with much finance to construct the temple. But there is no official reason for this. It is believed that if the temple had been finished then this would have been the highest temple in the country.
But it is rightly said that one can fight with its problem but not with fate. Bhojpur has very less relevance in the history. The temple witness many visitors who come here for the blessing.
