Monsoon has arrived and it is raining all over India. And Madhya Pradesh, the central part of India, is considered as one of the best destinations to travel in monsoon. The state is filled with places which can take you back in time. To name few are Sanchi, Bhimbetka, Gauhar Mahal, Gwalior fort, Khajuraho, etc. But there is a place near to Bhopal which is not explored much and has all right to be in your bucket list–Udayagiri. It will not be wrong to say that Udayagiri is Madhya Pradesh’s best-kept secret. (Also read: Mandu-An Ode To History Lovers)
Located 58km from Bhopal, Udayagiri is famous for caves which are basically a collection of 20 Gupta-era temples. Also known as the Varaha Cave, it depicts Vishnu in a massive carving as Varaha (boar) incarnation and rescuing goddess Earth (Bhudevi, Prithivi) from the depths of the cosmic ocean.
Situated in Vidisha district, these caves are the example of classical Gupta era art. Trek to the top of the hill for a 360-degree view of the forested hills and valleys around Udayagiri. The place also has a series of rock-shelters and petroglyphs, buildings, inscriptions, water systems, fortifications.
The road heading towards Udayagiri is very beautiful. With lush green pastures and cold wind, passing makes the journey more memorable. It is often said that sometimes the journey is more important than reaching the destination.

Though the unlock.phase 1 has started but things are no more like before. What we are missing most in this current situation is spending time out in the greens. 🍃🌿 While we do have a little green space in our home but the experience of spending time in gardens and biodiversity parks of the city, have always been one of our favorite activity to do. Like this one is a happy memory from Bhopal. The monument in the picture is #tazulmasjid . There is a debate between Tazul Masjid and Jama Masjid in Delhi. It is not confirmed which one is big and huge. ☺️ #atravelkatha #photooftheday #bhopalgram #explorbhopal #bhopaldiaries #travelfromhome #stayhome #streets_storytelling #street_photography #outdoors #traveloutfit #historybuff #dirtybootsandmessyhair #girlsdreamtravel #indiangirls #indiangirlstravel #gogreen #outfitoftheday #globaldesi #girlswhowander #travelrealindia #passionpassport #sheisnotlost #tripotocommunity #cometcommunity #couplewholovestotravel #MaiBhiSadakChap
Travelling to Udayagiri was a very surreal experience for me. As travel enthusiasts, I am always looking forward to such places. Less crowded making this place more beautiful and explorable. Historical places need time and patience to understand the art which is kept on display.
Next time when you visit Madhya Pradesh, do surely visit this less travelled place Udayagiri.
