Bhopal, a city of lakes, celebrates its cuisines with everything from meat, curries, drinks, culture. Known for its historic culture, exquisiteness, Bhopal offers traditional cuisines. As ruled by Nawabs, the food habit here have a strong influence of the Muslim community which is why the highlight of the culinary culture in the city is the wide variety of meats. However, with the time, the city has also developed a wide range of vegetarian cuisines too. (ALSO READ: ABOUT UDAYGIRI)
Not many know but Bhopal was ruled by Begums too and under their rule the city had developed a lot. The city’s diverse history offers a plethora of varied cuisines and restaurants. And one is such Minto Hall—crown of Bhopal. Built by Nawab Sultan Jahan Begum in 1909, the building was built to felicitate Lord Minto. Unfortunately, Sultan Jahan Begum was not able complete it and her son Nawab Shah Jahan Begum completed it. The royal building describes Jahan Begum passion for the architecture. Minto Hall is visibly fusion of Indo-British architecture. However, the building never served its purpose as Lord Minto never came here to stay.
After the lockdown was over, I decided to visit this place. There is a rooftop restaurant which I had heard a lot about. The experience of dining at a royal palace is going back to the time. As I reached here and entered the beautiful property, I was amazed to see the white building shining in its all glory. Beautiful garden decked up with flowers, birds chirping and that earthy smell was actually making me feel as if I was sitting in a time machine and had travelled back to that era. But moving ahead, I entered into the palace, it is well designed and decorated. But what caught my attention is that every room has name of the Begums. This heritage property has two meeting rooms, 2 committee rooms, one board room and a media centre. There is a multi purpose hall too.
After crossing this, I took lift to reach my destination which is restaurant. As I stepped out of the lift, the view just stole my heart. The panoramic view and the feeling of standing 50 feet above is something to be experienced in person. The restaurant offers delicious food right from vegetarian to Bhopal’s traditional cuisine. Going through the menu, I stopped at Minto Hall special dish which is actually made from meat. I ordered with soup, Hara Bhara Til Kabab and crispy corn. Till my order was getting prepared, I thought of exploring the restaurant.
They have kept pictures of Independence, pre Independence and Bhopal history on display. Minto Hall rooftop restaurant has two options of seating—one you can opt for inside seating arrangement and other one is outside from where you can view the beautiful city. From the restaurant, Bhopal iconic Taj-ul-masajid is also visible. If you go in the evening, the aura is out of imagination. While, I was busy gazing and clicking pictures, my food arrived and I started relishing on it. With every bite, I can understand what a royal palace food means. Properly cooked with exact use of spices which I can taste at every time I chew my food. And what was more making food tasty was the smile of the people working there. They were serving with all smile and warmth. Helping and guiding you about all the dishes which makes easy in choosing any dish.
Couples here can plan for a romantic dinner or family dinner too is also not a bad option. But one should surely come here to taste the royalty. Unfortunately, staying option is not open here.
Minto Hall also enjoys the tag of being once state assembly hall. So, when are you making plan to visit Bhopal—city of lakes!
